William Cochran made pioneering contributions to the science of X-ray crystallography, and his work has made a profound impact on its development and application of the field. He made many original contributions to lattice dynamics and its relation to phase transitions, which stimulated a new and fruitful field of results.

In 1978, Dr. Cochran was awarded the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society of London.
