Before Los Alamos National Laboratory existed, there the Los Alamos Ranch School. Stirling Colgate was one of the last graduates to receive a diploma from the Ranch School in 1943, just before the Army took it over. Colgate later became a theoretical physicist at the laboratory, becoming an expert in working with satellites and nuclear physics.

Dr. Colgate is now retired from Los Alamos.
