Citation
For his contributions in automating the synthesis of DNA oligonucleotides.

Marvin H. Caruthers received a B.S. in chemistry from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Dr. Caruthers is presently a member of the Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty at the University of Colorado, where he has been a Distinguished Professor since 1979.

Dr. Caruthers' research interests include nucleic acid chemistry and biochemistry. His laboratory uses modern concepts in nucleic acid chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology to study regulation and control of gene expression. The methodologies that are currently used for chemically synthesizing DNA were developed in his laboratory, and have been incorporated into so called "gene-machines" for the purpose of synthesizing DNA used by biochemists, biologists, molecular biologists, and biophysical chemists for various research applications.
