Akito Arima, a world-renowned nuclear physicist, has held many key scientific and government positions in Japan including Minister of State for Science and Technology, Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Chairman of the Central Council for Education, and Scientific Counselor, Ministry of Education. Dr. Arima was also President of The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) from 1993-1998 and has spent considerable time in academia in both teaching and administrative positions. Some of his former academic appointments include President; Dean of the Faculty of Science; and Director of Computer Center, all at the University of Tokyo; and Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Arima has received many awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his work. He is also an accomplished poet and received the Prize of the Haiku Society in 1988. Mr. Arima completed his B.S. in 1953, his M.S. in 1956, and his D.Sci. in 1958 at the University of Tokyo.
