After completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at Penn State in 2010, Shanna planned to continue her education in a PhD program, but found the lab too isolating. Searching for an alternative outlet for her insatiable hunger for learning and her passion for people, she began volunteering as a Science Presenter at the Franklin Institute in 2011. Soon thereafter she was hired as a Science Interpreter, delivering live science shows and demonstrations for school groups and the public. For more than seven years, she called The Franklin Institute home, supporting the mission to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology.

Unsung Heroes

What do an art student, a suburban family of four, a retired couple from Portugal, and an inner-city second grader have in common? They all visit the Franklin Institute. In a normal year more than 800,000 visitors come to the museum, every single one of them for a different reason. The art student may come to do research for a project, the family to spend some quality time together, the Portuguese couple to experience an American cultural center, and the second grader for a field trip. Each of them has a different motive and wildly different interests.
