Together with Victor Vali (awarded posthumously), Richard Shorthill was responsible for the first experimental demonstration of the fiber optic gyroscope.

Shorthill received both his B.A. (1954) and Ph.D. (1960) from the University of Utah, where he remains on faculty today. Shorthill also spent many years of his career at The Boeing Co..
