Dr. Rathmann is the recipient of the 1997 Bower Award for Business Leadership for his notable career of entrepreneurial success in pioneering biotechnology as a distinct realm of business enterprise. He conceived, created and directed Amgen, Inc. to become a financially independent and productive leader in the field. Through Amgen and currently through ICOS Corporation, Dr. Rathmann has and continues to make fundamental contributions in shaping the way biotechnology can be pursued.

A trained physical chemist, Rathmann received his B.S. from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is currently chairman, president and CEO of ICOS Corporation. From 1980 through 1990, he served in these same roles at Amgen, Inc. Prior to founding Amgen, Rathmann was vice president for research and development in the Diagnostics Division of Abbott Laboratories.
