Dr. Capasso is a recipient of the John Price Wetherill Medal for his pioneering contributions to the technique of bandgap engineering and its innovative use in solid state electronics, optoelectronics, and semiconductor science and, in particular, for his invention and experimental demonstration of the quantum cascade laser.

Federico Capasso received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Rome in 1973. He came to the United States in 1976 as a visiting scientist at AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technology), where he still conducts his research.
