The 192nd Franklin Institute Awards Ceremony and Dinner took place on April 21 and honored eight laureates for their exceptional achievements.
A sold-out crowd of nearly 800 guests celebrated the presentation of medals in a ceremony hosted by Charlie Rose. For the 14th consecutive year, the Awards Ceremony and Dinner was presented by Bank of America. During Awards Week, the laureates presented lectures at area colleges and demonstrated aspects of their research for hundreds of students in high school and the Institute’s youth education programs. In addition, two special public lectures highlighted the work of Bower Science Award winner Bill Borucki, and his work searching for life-sustaining planets in our galaxy, and Bower Business winner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, and his work on the Cancer Moonshot 2020 project.
Awards Week is made possible thanks to the hard work of numerous volunteers and the generosity of our supporters, including Awards Week sponsor TE Connectivity. Hollie Powers Holt and Tom Lynch, Awards Co-Chairs, helped to make the event a triumph. The Friends Committee and the Awards Corporate Committee promoted the event, which raised more than $510,000 to forward the Institute’s mission to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology. The Committee on Science and the Arts selects the laureates and meets throughout the year to do so. Next year’s co-chairs, Maureen Brennan-Miller and Michael C. Forman, kindly ask that you mark April 27, 2017 on your calendar for the next Awards Ceremony and Dinner. Please enjoy photos from this year’s event in the gallery below.
