Joseph LeConte Smith, Jr.'s research interests focus on cryogenic engineering; thermodynamics; fluid mechanics; heat transfer; and applied superconductivity. Dr. Smith has been an MIT faculty member since 1958, and was awarded the position of Samuel C. Collins Sr. Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1994.

He received his B.M.E. (1952) and M.S. (1954) from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his Sc.D. (1959) from MIT.
