John B. Stanbury has been engaged in pioneering research on the diseases of thyroid gland since 1949. Initially, Dr. Stanbury worked on diseases related to genetically enzymatic deficiencies of the thyroid. His research led to in an increasing interest in the inherited diseases, and laid the foundation for molecular endocrinology investigations. Dr. Stanbury authored, with two colleagues, "The Metabolic Basis of Inherited Diseases," now a seminal text.

Dr. Stanbury helped to organize the International Council for the Control of the Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) which plays an important catalytic function in the control of iodine deficiency in many developing countries.
