Recipient of The Elliott Cresson Medal, along with Joe Milton McCord, for their work of discovering and elucidating the biology of free radical reactions and their enzymatic controls of living organisms, as well as the pathology of free radical diseases.

Irwin Fridovich studied biochemistry at Duke University and joined their faculty after completing his Ph.D. in 1955. He served as Joe Milton McCord's mentor in the late 1960's, while McCord completed his Ph.D. at Duke.
