How will my membership be affected by the closure?
Benefits such as IMAX Passes will be temporarily unavailable while we are in our initial reopening phase. As soon as our theaters can safely reopen, you can resume usage of free and discounted tickets, where applicable.

Why do Members now have to reserve General Admission tickets in advance?
The Franklin Institute is following city guidelines to encourage contactless payments to protect our box office staff. To manage capacity, tickets for general admission and special exhibits are limited and sold on a timed basis. Time slots may sell out; if sold out, early admission will not be allowed.

What additional cleaning measures are in place?
We have implemented enhanced daily cleaning and sanitation protocols that go above and beyond our already stringent sanitation procedures.

  • New disinfecting equipment
  • New EPA disinfectant supplies
  • Increased frequency of restroom cleaning
  • Increased cleaning staff present throughout the day
  • Increased hand sanitizer stations
  • Updated training for cleaning staff
  • Promote hand washing
  • Provide PPE for cleaning staff
  • Increased outside air in ventilation
  • High touch points identified and more frequently sanitized 

What measures are you taking to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your Team Members?
Team Members will wear face coverings while on the job, interacting with Guests. Additionally, Team Members will undergo a temperature screening process at the beginning of each shift. We have added protective barriers in all locations where purchases are made, tickets scanned, and temperature is checked. Also, the safety of our team members depends on guests wearing face coverings and observing social distancing.

Are there any changes I should know about before I visit?

  • Temperature scans are required upon entry to the museum.
  • Masks/face coverings that fully cover guests' noses and mouths are now required during visits.
  • Physical distancing between families/groups and staff
  • Designated eating and drinking areas
  • More live shows and dissections
  • Limited capacity daily
  • Advance ticket purchase is now required.
  • The Franklin Institute Café is now open during museum hours. All new café offerings are now available, featuring an assortment of sandwiches, salads, and beverages—plus freshly-baked snacks, including homemade cookies and giant soft pretzels. The café is located in the Ticketing area, with socially-distanced indoor and outdoor seating options. There is a variety of local take-out options available within walking distance. You may re-enter the museum as long as you have your ticket.

What exhibits will be unavailable during my visit?

  • Franklin Air Show
  • SportsZone
  • Tuttleman IMAX® Dome Theater
  • Holt & Miller Observatory

Why are these exhibits and experiences unavailable?

  • Franklin Air Show: The flight simulators cannot be safely opened at this time. Many interactives in the exhibit involve air currents and blowers that could create hazardous conditions.
  • SportZone: This is one of our most hands-on exhibits and cannot be safely opened at this time.      
  • Holt & Miller Observatory: There is not enough room in the space to observe physical distancing requirements. 

When will all exhibits and experiences be available?
We will reopen other exhibitions when it is safe to do so.

Am I required to wear a face mask during my visit?
Yes. If you have a medical condition or disability that prevents you from wearing a face covering please contact Guest Services to discuss ways we can accommodate you.

What is considered an appropriate face covering during my visit?
Face coverings in line with CDC’s guidelines are considered appropriate for a visit to The Franklin Institute, and should cover an individual’s nose and mouth.

What about facing coverings when guests are eating?
Face coverings may be removed only in designated indoor or outdoor dining areas and must be worn at all times elsewhere in the museum. 

How will physical distancing be enforced?
Signage and floor graphic indicators will be used throughout the museum in high-traffic areas to allow for and encourage proper social distancing. Family members and others who live in the same household can be closer together. Team Members will also be on-site to explain and reinforce these requirements.

Can I bring in outside food and drink?
Yes. You are welcome to bring food and drink to enjoy outdoors in Science Park. There is a variety of local options available within walking distance. You may re-enter the museum with your ticket. Refrigeration and food heating options are not available.

How can I buy tickets?
Please visit fi.edu to purchase your tickets in advance of your visit. Should you require assistance making your reservations, please call 215.448.1200.

I bought a ticket but now do not feel well or cannot attend. What do I do?
Please contact the reservations office at reservations@fi.edu or 215.448.1200 to reschedule your visit.

Where do I have to get my temperature taken?
Temperature scanning stations will be located upon your entry at either our 20th Street entrance for Special Needs and Stroller access as well as in the Atrium. These machines do not record any data to maintain privacy.

What will happen if a guest has a high temperature?
Any guest that has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will not be able to enter the museum. We will offer a second temperature check with a handheld device for validation. Tickets will be rescheduled or refunded.

Will wheelchairs be available? If so, how will they be cleaned?
Yes. They will be wiped down after each use and will be sprayed at the end of each day.
