About the Opportunity

The Chief Administrative and Financial Officer (“CAFO”) is responsible for all financial matters of The Franklin Institute.  The CAFO reports to and works closely with the President and CEO.  In addition, this position partners with the senior leadership and the Board of Trustees to develop and implement strategies across the organization.  

The CAFO must adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while managing three (3) functional areas:  Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology Services 

Key Responsibilities

The CAFO responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Oversee all financial accounting and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements, and audit requirements. Maintain internal control safeguards and coordinate all audit activities.
  • Oversee financing strategies, debt management, reporting, and control and banking relationships.
  • Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets to monitor progress and present financial metrics internally and externally. 
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a senior management team member.
  • Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, funders, auditors, business partners, etc.
  • Remain current on nonprofit finance and administration best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Oversee all legal issues, including managing outside counsel and reviewing contracts.
  • Oversee the health and welfare benefits program and staff pension plan program.
  • Oversee hiring for all internal positions to support the operating needs of the Institute.
  • Responsible for all insurance necessary and associated with the daily operations of the Institute.
  • Coordination with all vendors associated with the medical needs of TFI staff. 
  • Work closely with all departments on staffing needs and the adherence to the rules, polices and regulations associated with employment at TFI. 
  • Oversee all IT infrastructure and support to the entire TFI organization. 
  • Ensure maintenance of all hardware, software, technology, and legal responsibilities
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to Finance and Investment Committee, Audit Committee, and Compensation Committee.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 7 to 10 years of financial management experience –minimum of a BS in Finance and Accounting; MBA preferred; a CPA a plus.
  • 5 years minimum in a senior-level management team.
  • Experience managing and negotiating contracts.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing business models for nonprofit organizations.
  • Knowledgeable of the workings of different departments.
  • Knowledge of tax-exempt debt.
  • Knowledge of Unrelated Business Income tax issues.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with many constituencies, such as Trustees, staff, and donors.
  • An effective communicator at all organizational levels, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information.
  • Mature and proactive, with evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the CEO of a complex organization. 
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
  • A collaborative and flexible style with a strong service orientation.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and team development and management.
  • Experience overseeing functional areas; Human Resources and ITS are preferred.
