Assistant Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving

Position Description:

The position is responsible for leading all aspects of the Franklin Institute’s foundation, corporate and government grants strategy for annual operations, restricted programs, strategic initiatives, capital, and campaign projects. The Assistant Director coordinates with leaders and staff in Science, Education, Digital, Exhibit and Program Development, and other units to acquire funding, both regionally and nationally, that advance strategic priorities. Collaborates inside and outside TFI to translate innovative ideas into competitive funding proposals by contributing to project visioning; identifying funding opportunities; developing grant proposals through tailored support, including coordinating preparation, authoring and coauthoring, and/or providing substantive feedback and editing. The position is supported by a Manager of Development Communications and Foundation Giving, and has access to the Manager of Corporate Giving and Institutional Giving Coordinator.

The role also serves as the development department’s primary writer, with responsibility for crafting foundation proposals, corporate grant applications and stewardship reports, writing and producing of the development department newsletter and annual fact sheet, and leading writing and editing services for projects across the development department, including solicitation letters, speeches, and publications for special projects. S/he will oversee any needed preparation of executive letters, speeches and other communications materials, including Board of Trustees reports and meeting materials. The position is responsible for working closely with the Institute’s design team on the production of other high-quality external publications.

Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university and at least 5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and careful attention to details
  • Ability to craft messages and present information in a compelling and effective manner
  • Self-starter with the ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize projects effectively
  • Exhibition of an excellent command of the English language with superior writing and editing skills
  • Ability to manage highly confidential information with discretion 
  • Ability to interface with Trustees and other high-level external relationships 
  • Ability to be effective working independently and as part of a team
  • Resourceful, independent problem-solver
  • Ability to provide a very high level of customer service and to interact effectively with donor audiences, TFI volunteer leadership and senior staff
  • Strategic and creative thinker 
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary
  • Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
