Director of Research and Evaluation

The Franklin Institute, the most visited museum in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, seeks a senior level professional as its Director of Research and Evaluation.  The Institute recently completed a new strategic plan in advance of its 200th anniversary in 2024 which details the need for a significantly expanded Research and Evaluation department. The Director of Research and Evaluation will develop and lead The Franklin Institute’s multi-scale efforts to measure the efficacy and impact of science learning programs and the visitor experience. This key position has responsibility and accountability for designing and implementing the evaluation of programs and projects at The Franklin Institute and for disseminating their results. The Director is responsible for oversight of collaborative development of key research questions, study design and methodology, and data analysis and reporting to various stakeholders. This individual will oversee and execute evaluation studies about educational programs, exhibits, audiences, content, etc. with the goal of understanding the needs of our audiences and in order to drive databased decision-making. The Director will hire and lead a team of multidisciplinary staff, which works, across the museum to ensure best practices, high quality, and effective communication of science learning research and evaluation.

Requires a PhD from an accredited college/university and at least 10 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience working in science museums and performing evaluation of informal learning preferred.  Must have expert research and evaluation skills, including both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and analysis.  Proven collaborative ability on creative projects as part of a team and with individuals.  Ability to apply mathematical operations in such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. Strong reasoning ability and can define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Excellent oral, visual, and written communication skills necessary and strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.  Expertise in advanced research tools (SPSS, SAS, R, Tableau).
