Men and women have dreamed of flight for thousands of years. People have watched birds fly and dreamed of the possibilities. However, it took hundreds of years for humans to understand the forces and principles of flight enough to make it possible for someone to fly through the air.

First, humans needed to understand the properties of the earth and air. Men and women invented and discovered ways of measuring things so that they could be classified and sorted. With this knowledge men and women have developed theories to explain and predict how and why the earth and air behave the way they do. Eventually, humans learned to harness these powers so that men and women could build the engines and wings needed to get off the ground to soar with the birds! The science that was developed to build flying machines is called aeronautics. Aeronautics is the science of flight.
