The History: Orville's personal diary tells us that at 2 A.M. Augustus Herring woke the campsite members up to report he believed a fox had stolen their chicken. In the morning the chicken was found safe and sound.

Right after breakfast, the oscillating wing machine was moved in front of their campsite building to begin gliding. Herring decided to move the machine back inside the building to weigh and calculate its "center of lift" [a point which acts as if all the lift forces were focused there].

Octave Chanute and Herring left with Dan Tate in the afternoon via a boat headed for Manteo.
