The Mayans, 2000 B.C. - 1500 A.D.

The Maya of Central America were masters of mathematics. The Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. They are frequently credited with inventing the first intricate writing system on the American continent.

The Mayan calendar was very accurate and complex. The earliest known solar calendars were carved in stone and used in 400 B.C. among the Maya. They used 20-day months and had two calendar years: the 365-day Vague Year, or haab, and the 260-day Sacred Rounda, or tzolkin, which coincided every 52 years, which together formed the day-count calendar.
