Pope Gregory XIII, 1582


Pope Gregory XIII of Italy, is known for his work with the calendar, which was named for him. He revised the Julian calendar which came to be known as the Gregorian calendar; it added a Leap Year every fourth year. The regular years consisted of 365 days, and a leap year of 366 days.

The Gregorian calendar is also known as the Christian calendar. It is used today throughout most of the Western world and in parts of Asia.
