![]() Students from the PEERS Program were given awards for participating in PEERS.
In 2002, PACTS was awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for PEERS (PACTS Environmental Education, Research, and Service) that expands the partnerships with Fairmount Park and the School District of Philadelphia. PEERS is a service learning program for students in grades 9 and 12 that involves environmental research, community service, and public engagement about environmental issues in schools, in the Park, and in the Institute. |
Over the three years of the project, PEERS will engage 300 students, 150 of whom will complete School District requirements for Service Learning. A key feature of the project is the opportunity for students to conduct scientific research, both at Centennial Lake in Fairmount Park and in the PACTS Lab. Students participate in field-based community service opportunities assisting Fairmount Park in restoration. In close coordination with the School District and the Fairmount Park Commission, students develop special presentations and workshops to educate the public about Centennial Lake and their efforts.
