PACTS Laboratory

Made possible through a generous grant from Unisys Corporation, the PACTS Laboratory at The Franklin Institute is an excellent environment for carrying out research activities.

(Above) Lance Washington, Nigel Christie, and Juna Dawson-Murray are comparing the pH test they had previously taken with their current pH test.

The lab is staffed by PACTS Explainers, who work in shifts, to conduct research and analyze data that is collected at Centennial Lake or assigned through special projects. The Lab assistants must make careful notations in the logbook regarding the status of their research at each session. There are also research animals who must be carefully tended to in order to gain a full understanding of their needs and habitat requirements.

Among the many research activities, students test and continually monitor the pH of the fish's water, and employ a special kit to fine tune the tank's environment to reach optimal levels for good health.

This versatile lab facility is unique in the Institute, and is well equipped to provide a base for a range of research and experimentation requirements.

bass As part of the PEERS project (PACTS Environmental Education, Research, and Service), students study the habitat of Centennial Lake in Fairmount Park. Thanks to the lab, they're able to continue their research away from the lake. The students monitor the health and living conditions of their sample fish, making adjustments as required.

The terrarium in Changing Earth is another project of the PACTS Lab Crew. They breed plants and animals inside the PACTS Lab and put them into the terrarium to live and then study the results of their adaptations.
