HANDS-ON SCIENCE KITS & WORKSHOPS
For Girl Scout Science Badges and Try-Its |
For Brownie Girl Scout Leaders
Movers
Peanut plants, paper planes, pinwheels, and the push of air. This kit shows your girls that science is great fun. Through the weeks they explore different forces and processes that are in action all around. Activities commence with a good look at air. You'll wrap up with a balloon-powered rocket race. In between, girls follow the trail of wind-borne seeds and watch plants come out of peanuts. From airplanes to apple seeds, it's a world in motion.
Space Explorer*
You can teach your girls about an orbit without making their heads spin! This kit comes with a whole galaxy of things to do and learn about. Girls start by using their own shadows to explore Earth's motion around the sun. In later activities, they recreate the phases of the moon, search for starry images, and launch a rocket. They'll take home a spectroscope, the constellation-in-a-can, and a sundial (just add sunshine), along with a new understanding of their world and universe.
Science Wonders
You don't have to be a magician to create your own paper from microscopic fibers, grow crystals in a jar of gel, or experiment with magnets as they attract, repel, and are mysteriously suspended, one above the other. Watch as a balloon suddenly expands, due to a chemical reaction...not a magic wand. The girls will understand how mysterious happenings are really quite understandable, and fun...and will take home their own science journal filled with opportunities for repeating these magical experiences.
For Junior Girl Scout Leaders
Science Sleuth
Investigating, questioning, solving mysteries...sleuthing! Have fun doing all of these things with your girls as you make crystals, create 'chromo-pies,' and solve the mystery of the cookie thief. Send the girls home with lots of neat creations that will bring out the sleuth in all of them.
Science in Everyday Life (previously called Science in the Worlds)
Science is everywhere! A pattern in a leaf, or an artistic design - science and math exist in the worlds of art and nature. From the science of snacks to the science of invention - with this kit, the girls will see that they can be scientists each and every day. Whether making magnificent sand sculptures, or making connections with scientists and inventors of today, as they experience science links in a range of areas, the girls will understand its fun and importance in their world...and perhaps see themselves as our scientists of the future.
Weather Watch*
Ever been rained out of a troop camping trip or picnic? Oh well - if we can't control the weather, at least we can understand it! This kit is full of simple demonstrations to reveal the invisible forces behind weather. Your troop will investigate the influences of air pressure, temperature, and the angles of sunshine. Meanwhile, fun activities put them in touch with more familiar aspects of meteorology. Static tubes, home-made clouds, temperature spirals, and bottled tornadoes are just some ways your girls will become amateur meteorologists.
Water Wonders
Does water have skin? How could water from Cleopatra's swimming pool be in your drinking glass, today? With this kit, your girls will learn the answers. They discover that water is everywhere...on Earth, in the sky, in an apple, in their own bodies. Together, troops explore the uses and abuses of water and form a conservation action plan. They demonstrate why water is strong enough to break apart a mountain and hold up an oceanliner - and why it gets stronger when you add salt! Your meeting place will be awash with experimentation and discovery.
This event is hosted by the Philadelphia area NSP Sister Council network of The National Science Partnership for Girl Scouts and Science Museums
