Remote Sensing

Objective:
Campers will see how filters used on remote systems in Earth orbit effect what we see.

Materials:
picture sheet B (Earth features...)
log sheet
pencils
5 yd x 10 yd sheets of red, blue, yellow, & green filters
picture sheet A
poster board
4 craft sticks
hot glue gun/sticks

Advance Preparation:
copy log sheets
Make a sheet of pictures that are different colors (you might include a banana, an apple, a green clover, etc.); this is picture sheet A.
Gather pictures taken from space for picture sheet B.
laminate picture sheets
cut filters into 2" x 4" rectangle
cut poster board into 9" squares

**Find images to use for the picture sheets HERE.

Procedure:

  1. Show the campers picture sheet A under each colored filter and ask them to guess what color each object is based on what they see through the filters.
  2. Give each camper one of each colored filter, 4 craft sticks, and four 1" x 12" strips of poster board.
  3. Instruct the campers to cut each of their poster board strips into two 2" strips & two 4" strips.
  4. Campers should use these strips to create a frame around each of their colored filters and then attach a craft stick to each for a handle.
  5. Display picture sheet A again. Have campers look at the sheet with each of their filters and record what the images in the picture look like using the intensity scale that follows:
    0 = Not visible, 1 = Faint, 2 = Medium, 3 = Dark, 4 = Black.
  6. Discuss how filters work and their effect on what we see.
  7. Have campers look at picture sheet B, and predict how each image will appear through the different colored filters.
  8. Now campers should test their predictions by viewing the images through each filter and recording what the images look like using the same scale they used in step 5.
  9. Discuss how remote-sensing systems use filters and why.
