SCIENCE IN THE SUMMER SCIENCE IS FUN!

GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer has been offering elementary school children entering 2nd through 6th grades a fun and free-of-charge science experience at public libraries in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties for 26 years. The Franklin Institute is honored to serve as administrator of this program beginning in summer 2012. BUCKS COUNTY - GENETICS

Build a cell, examine your fingerprints, and extract DNA from a strawberry!

 

CHESTER COUNTY - CHEMISTRY

Turn pennies into gold, make crystals, watch popcorn "dance," and learn about acids, bases, and indicators.

 

DELAWARE COUNTY - PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ELECTRICITY

Learn about magnetism, static electricity, electrical currents, and circuits with a compass, an electromagnet, and an electrostatic generator.

 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY - SIMPLE MACHINES

Build six kinds of simple machines and learn about their uses: lever, inclined plane, screw, wheel, pulley, and gear.

 

PHILADELPHIA COUNTY - OCEANOGRAPHY

Visit the ocean without leaving the city and learn about many different kinds of sea life including sponges, coral, jellyfish, and mollusks and use microscopes, micro viewers, and magnifying glasses to observe microscopic sea life such as animal plankton and zooplankton.
