About Frog Commissary

At Frog Commissary, we believe that the experience of eating with friends, family, and colleagues should be one of the joys of life and leave a lasting impression.

Founded in 1973, Frog Commissary has served 15 million guests at its groundbreaking restaurants and over 15,000 catered events. The Frog culinary team, unrivaled for its creativity and accessibility, at work at the spectacular Franklin Institute, caters events large and small—from dazzling cocktail parties and elegant seated dinners to barbecues. We focus not on the size or budget of the event, but on the experience. We may be caterers, but we’re also restaurateurs at heart. Our standards for food quality—locally sourced from the best purveyors—are the same we developed years ago. At Frog, we believe you’re only as good as your last meal.

Frog Commissary evolved out of Frog, a storefront restaurant at 16th and Spruce streets which Steve Poses opened in 1973 with mismatched chairs and blackboard menus. The food was unlike anything the city had experienced. Years later, Frog would be named “Best Restaurant” of the past 25 years by the editors of Philadelphia magazine, having helped define what living and working in Center City Philadelphia was like. Frog was followed four years later by the legendary Commissary, a cafeteria that served omelets to caviar, was equal parts piano bar, fine dining restaurant and take-out store. Frog, Commissary, and several other restaurants eventually grew into Frog Commissary and soon after, our proud partnership with The Franklin Institute.

Steve Poses, considered the forefather of the modern restaurant scene in Philadelphia, is the company’s founder and creative chief. A chef and best-selling author, his Frog Commissary Cookbook is the No. 1 selling cookbook in Philadelphia’s history. Steve recently followed it up with At Home by Steve Poses: A Caterers Guide to Cooking and Entertaining, a book and companion website that is everything you need for entertaining family and friends.
