Caught in The Web

BUCKMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This month, we've caught Buckman Elementary School in the Web. The school, located in Portland, Oregon, has been a pioneer online for over a year now. Perhaps the most amazing thing about Buckman's Website is that the students involved are all in Room 100, a mixed age kindergarten, first, and second grade classroom. These kids were on the Web before they were allowed to walk home from school alone!

One visit to Buckman's homepage and you'll quickly appreciate that Room 100 has an innovative teacher leading these young scientists on their Internet adventures. Some of them may never have traveled beyond Portland, but they've met students and scientists from all over the world thanks to CU-SeeMe videoconferencing software. Under the watchful eye of their teacher, Tim Lauer, the students have met people from as far away as China! Last year, the students sponsored a "Guess the Pennies" contest to see who could guess the number of pennies in their jar. The winner of the contest was in Munich, Germany. The contest prize, a travel mug emblazoned with the Buckman school name and picture, was sent overseas to the winner.

At any time, you can visit Buckman and see what the students are doing. "Almost Live from Portland" offers a continually updated picture of the classroom activities. Student projects, like Space Page, The Bubble Machine, and Grace and Naomi's School Staff Survey are also on display.

Be sure to visit Buckman Elementary School.
