October

Project Title: QOTD: Question of the Day

Project Begin & End Dates: 10/01/98 to 6/01/99

Project Summary:
On Thursdays at noon your class will receive (via email) a question to answer. You have until noon on Wednesday to answer the question. The top three most creative answers will be rewarded by being chosen as the "Top Three" answers for the week! The question cycle will then be repeated.

Project Details
Project Level: Basic
Curriculum Area: Language
Technologies Used: Email
Full Project Description:
There is a process involved in the sending of the question on Thursday morning. Our class brainstorms and selects a creative, open ended question to send.

Once the question has been sent the participating classes have just under a week to decide upon their most creative answer. Many teacher use the QOTD as a journal activity, an extra class assignment or as homework.

The real work begins as answers start flowing into our mailbox. We collect all the answers, record the participants, share them, evlauate them accoriding to our criteria and finally decide upon a top three by reaching a class consensus.

Then the process begins again - announce the top three and offer a new question!

Objectives:
The objectives and outcomes of this project are two fold.

First, the participants in this project gain practice in creative thinking. For participants who have to make selections to choose which answer gets sent in to represent their class, there is also experience in evaluation and analysis.

Second, the project leaders gain new knowledge as they study creativity, questioning strategies and evaluation skills. Additionally the project leaders gain valuable experience in information management as they learn to manage the incomming data.

This is a project which invites students and teachers to investigate traits which have a genetic basis, and to use the raw data found to look for trends and percentages in various populations.

Teachers can choose from several lessons, and share their results with others schools.

Timeline: now until October 31
Limited to 10 Middle Schools
Signup: by October 10,1998 via internet or call 909-272- 9572
Among the traits evaluated are: thumbness, arm folding, ear shape, length of index finger, handedness, Are you a Square? Tongue roll and tricks, and others. Some lessons are downloadable (mac only) at www.mcn.org/ed/cur/cw/cwhome.html. Look for the Telegenetics links.

Last time we did this we had schools from across the globe!
Look forward to hearing from you!

Objectives:
Have fun doing real scientific research and data gathering while studying genetics. To explore and celebrate human diversity.
