Down and Dirty DNA Extraction
By Rod Twirl

In bacterial cells there is no nucleus, so DNA just floats around in the cytoplasm. This piece of information makes bacteria like e-coli a prime target for DNA extraction. A detergent was added to a solution containing e-coli, and heated for 15 minutes in order to allow the soap to dissolve the cell membrane and set the DNA free. After the solution was removed, 3ml of ethyl alcohol was added to the solution because while DNA is soluble in water, it precipitates out in alcohol. A rod was then put into the test tube containing the different liquid layers. As the rod is turned, the DNA sticks to it like spaghetti allowing it to be removed and stored.
