"Science Works!"
How Science Benefits Your Community

Timeline of Program Events

June 30
Extended Deadline!
Deadline for applications. A panel judges the applications against the determined web criteria and the quality of the proposed project activities. A scoring document is created with a formula for evaluation of each application. Each member of the panel uses the document to consider each application. The panel meets to discuss and tally their evaluations. Total scores are used to determine the twenty teams.
July 10 The twenty teams are selected and notified of their status. All twenty teams are instructed to arrange travel for the orientation conference. Two representatives will be invited to travel at the expense of the program. A third representative is welcome and encouraged to attend at their own expense as a cost-share demonstration.
Sept. 22 Representatives of each team attend the orientation conference in Washington, DC. A draft agenda (subject to change) describes the events.
Sept. 23 Each team receives mini-grant funds in the amount of $2,500.00 per team. These funds should be used to support the proposed program activities.
Nov. 22 Checkpoint for creation of the project webspace. TFI staff determine that the baseline Project Identification criteria have been met.
Mar. 21 All twenty teams participate in the International Showcase of Science. This online event provides an opportunity to share how science benefits your community.
Mar. 22 Deadline for completion of project webspace. The project webspace must include scrapbook evidence that a local showcase event took place in the community to promote awareness of your partnership and science investigation. The showcase event does not have to be held on March 21, although it certainly may be.
Mar. 23 Judging panel meets to evaluate the project webspace content for awarding of "The Unisys Prize for Online Science Education." The judging panel will use a scoring instrument which allots 85 points for webspace criteria, reserving the final 15 points for considerations related to the participation in the International Showcase of Science.
Mar. 30 The winner of "The Unisys Prize for Online Science Education" is announced. The winning team receives a cash prize in the amount of $10,000. Runners-Up and/or Honorable Mentions receive a gift.
Apr. 2 Final report submission due to AAAS.
