Chris Pendergast was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease or ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ) 6 years ago.  For the last 4 years he has been organizing a Ride For Life where people travel in their wheelchairs or on bikes to raise money to find a cure for ALS. This year he traveled from Montauk To Manhattan. Along the way he stopped at Norwood Elementary School to speak to us about this disease and how we can help.

This letter was written by a fifth grade student at Norwood Elementary School.

Dear Mr. Pendergast,

I really admire all that you have done. When I found out you had A.L.S., I was shocked, horrified and sad. I admire how you know that you are going to die soon
(and that must be really scary) but you still live life to the fullest and try to help other people. What makes you special is your courage and kindness. You rode across Long Island to help other people. I hope you know how your kindness has helped others. You have inspired me to do so many things that I can't mention them all. You have inspired me to help others by raising money. I hope someday that I can help you in some way. One day we will have a cure for A.L.S., thanks to you and your kindness.
