KS2: 7 - 11 YEARS OLD

UNIT 5E - Earth, Sun and Moon - Year 5

The History of Gravity section on the website and the section from Copernicus onwards could be very useful here.

Show the children the flight profile movie and explain that the same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth.

A fun experiment to do is to take an overhead projector and give the children each a Moon template to draw on.

Shine the projector on a football in a darkened room and have the children sit in a circle around the ball.

Ask each child to draw what they see on their Moon template.

A more modern version of this is to use a video or digital camera (handing it on around the circle) to take photos of all the viewpoints - what do you notice when they're printed out?

Making orreries is also excellent fun things to do to get over the idea of orbit, relative size and movement relative to the Sun. They can also see the change in shadow if they're careful...
