v
Beginning
our unit on Simple Machines before our class trip was very beneficial to the
children.
v
They
were familiar with the terminology at the exhibits and could identify the
simple machines.
v
The
children actually got to experience the scientific principle being displayed at
the exhibit. E.g. the effect of friction vs. very little friction at the “Climb
a Wall” Exhibit
v
Meeting
with the chaperones beforehand and giving them their own packet which included
a schedule, pictures of each exhibit they were to visit and a timetable for
each event was very beneficial. The chaperones were relieved to know it wasn’t
up to them to keep the children occupied.
v
The
children received their own packet with information on the 2 main characters
they were going to visit at the IMAX Theater’s show BUGS!
v
For
downtime, they had a Search ‘n Find and crossword puzzle to work on whose
content centered on the movie BUGS!
v
In
each child’s packet was an invitation from the Queen of Zultan
to scan the galaxy for a machine that would make their lives back home easier.
v
The
children were given pictures of the exhibit they were to visit and the time at
which to be there. This helped to keep them focused and on track.
v
Unfortunately,
with all of my planning I saw one chaperone sitting on a bench letting the
children discover things for themselves. She wasn’t engaging the children in
their learning.
v
Our
PowerPoint demonstration, that each group was going to make on the simple
machine they chose and why, has been delayed because they’re just learning this
in their technology class.
