Before Going To The Franklin Institute

·        The children will be able to identify the lever, the pulley, and the inclined plane

·        The children will be able to calculate the amount of work done by each simple machine by applying the rule         Work = force x distance

·        The children will know that work is done when

something is moved

·        The children will know that work is measured in joules

·        The children will know how to use a spring scale to measure force and that it is measured in newtons

 

 

 

At The Franklin Institute

·         Each group will be assigned an hour at Exhibit 1, which will be either the Mandell Center, Mechanics and Patterns or the Sports Challenge. Each group will be assigned certain stations.

·        Then the group will be assigned 45 min. at Exhibit 2,

·        which will be the other one from the above list.

·        Each child will pretend to be an alien visiting the Franklin Institute in search of the perfect machine to bring back to their planet to help their people do their work

 

Back At School

Each group will make a Power Point Presentation of the machine they have chosen for their planet.
