SOLAR SYSTEM LESSON PLANS
The basis of our study was taken from Evan Moor's (1999) Making Books With Pockets: July, which features a thematic unit on Space. This is a great unit which focuses on the following areas: the planets, the sun and moon, and the stars. The book includes a picture dictionary with vocabulary, and an extensive resource list. This is available for purchase ($12.95) at this link: www.amazon.com
Our study also used Copycat Press' (1995) Our Spectacular Solar System unit, which is a thematic unit on the Solar System. This unit includes constellations, planets, and clip art for your bulletin board, as well as a 96-page teaching guide with reproducibles, patterns, mini books, planetary journal, as well as a musical play about the Solar System. This is available for purchase ($14.95) at:
http://www.copycatpress.com/
The experiment that was used in our unit study is entitled: Build a Bubble Powered Rocket. The lesson plan and procedures are available for free on the Internet at: http://spaceplace.jpl.nasa.gov/rocket.htm
A Solar System bingo game was created by the teacher for special use with this unit. This was a helpful tool for English language learners to review content vocabulary in a fun way. To link to the game and reproducible bingo cards, click here.
