In Gym class, the students will experiment with what helps them jump the highest when they are playing basketball. The children will view a video of basketball players jumping to take a shot at the basket. (We viewed the And One Mix Tape purchased from used Amazon.com.) Next, pairs of students will discuss and write down what they noticed about the basketball player as they jumped. After several minutes several students will share what their partner said. The teacher will compile these observations on a class chart entitled What We Notice. The children will view portions of the video again. In pairs they will discuss and record what they wonder about the jumping. After several minutes several students will share what their partner said. The teacher will compile these observations on a class chart entitled What We Wonder. The students will consider which of our wonderings would be most feasible to investigate. (i.e. how does the basketball player jump so high? Do tall players jump higher than shorter players, What helps a basketball player jump high? Can a basketball player jump higher with a running start or standing still? The same day or a different day the students will develop an investigation that addresses their wonder.
