INVENTION CHALLENGE - 2

Invention 1 | Invention 2 | Invention 3 | Invention 4

How much water is in your bath?

  • Run the taps till you get the right temperature of water for you.
  • Get an empty plastic bottle of a known volume, e.g., a 2 litre bottle of Coke.
  • Time how long it takes to fill the plastic bottle. Record this time.
  • Now put the plug in the bath and time how long it takes for the taps to fill the bath to your desired depth. Record this time.

Now you’ve got to do some Maths, so get your calculator ready.

EXAMPLE

Time taken to fill a 2 litre bottle                        13 seconds
Time taken to fill the bath                         7 minutes 35 seconds

Time taken to fill a bath
[Changed to seconds]                                             455 seconds

Time taken to fill a 1 litre bottle             13 seconds / 2  =          6.5 seconds to fill 1 litre

How many litre bottles would it take to fill your bath

                                       455 seconds  to fill a bath =          70 LITRES
6.5 seconds to fill a litre
