A drop of water…a journey through time.

Did you know that the amount of water on this planet has remained the same since the Earth was first formed 4600 million years ago?

We have to remember that water exists as a gas, a liquid and a solid.

In a 100-year period, a single water molecule will spend 98 years in the oceans, 20 months as ice, about 2 weeks in lakes and rivers, and less than a week in the atmosphere.

A drop of water that falls from the sky as rain today could once have been drunk by a dinosaur and used to form part of its blood. Another drop of rain could have fallen into the soil, been absorbed by a large oak tree and used to form part of the water in a leaf that was then eaten by a caterpillar which was eaten by a bird which was eaten by a fox. The histories of drops of water are vast.

Design a flow chart or timeline and create your own journey of a drop of water. Here is an example of part of a flow chart to get you started.

Water in the oceans 100 million years ago evaporated and formed clouds.

These clouds formed rain [precipitation] which collected in lakes and rivers.
