Meeting 4 Plan

OVERVIEW:

The meeting will take place on the premises of the retirement community or senior facility. If circumstances do not permit this, substitute another activity for the facility tour. Planned activities consist of completing pages in Memory Book, sharing of completed Memory Book, facility tour, taking a group photo, and a song and dance activity.

Appropriate for Grade Level: K-3 (May be adapted for older students.)

 

MATERIALS:

  • Tape/CD player with music to song/dance activity of teacher's choice
  • Previously bound Memory Books - Student Version
  • Previously bound Memory Books - Older Adult Version
  • Clipboard and pencil for each student
  • Meeting 4 Checklist (provided in .PDF format)
  • Little Buddy Portrait Page (provided in .PDF format) NOTE: This page should be included in the student copy of the Memory Book prior to meeting and will be completed during the meeting.
  • Venn Diagram - "My Grandbuddy and I" (provided in .PDF format) NOTE: This page should be included in the Student version of the Memory Book prior to meeting and will be completed during the meeting.
  • Grandbuddies Project Evaluation Forms (sample provided in .PDF format)

Worksheets are presented in Adobe® .PDF format and require the user to have the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® Version 5 installed. Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Click on the icon below to obtain the free Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® if needed.

PRE-MEETING PREPARATION:

  1. Memory Books should be assembled and bound prior to the meeting. See the Publish a Memory Book section of this guide for additional information. Students will have completed their stories about his/her Grandbuddy and illustrated the Grandbuddy Portrait Page before the books are bound. The "My Grandbuddy and I" Venn Diagrams will be completed by the student and older adult during the meeting.

  2. Prior to traveling to the senior facility, review the Checklist of Activities with students. Instruct students to make a check mark next to each item on the list when they have completed the task.

  3. Provide each student with a clipboard containing the Meeting 4 Checklist along with a pencil for note-taking.

ACTIVITY 1 - Memory Books

  • Students will present the Memory Books to their Grandbuddies and take a few moments to share the contents with their friend.

  • Teacher will announce to the group that there are two additional activities necessary to complete the books and explain how to complete the Little Buddy Portrait page and the "Ways We Are Alike" Venn diagram.

ACTIVITY 2- Little Buddy Portrait

  • Students will pose while their Grandbuddies draw a sketch of them in the student's Memory Book.

ACTIVITY 3- Venn Diagram

  • Grandbuddies and students will brainstorm a list of ways they are alike, different, and the same.
  • Grandbuddy will fill out the diagram in the student's Memory Book while the student fills out the diagram in his/her Grandbuddy's Memory Book.

ACTIVITY 4- Tour of Senior Facility

  • Grandbuddies will take students on a tour of spots of interest, returning to the meeting room at a pre-determined time.

ACTIVITY 5- Pose for Group Photograph

ACTIVITY 6- Song/Dance Activity

  • Teacher will play the music to the chosen song . Students will teach their Grandbuddies the words and motions to the song. Teacher will play the music again and ask the Grandbuddies to join in.

FINALE

  • At this time the older adults will be given copies of evaluation forms with directions for completion and return. Teachers thank the older adults for their participation in the project and give any announcements that may need to be made regarding follow-up visits, etc.
