Meeting 3 Plan

OVERVIEW:

This meeting will take place on school premises. Planned activities consist of student/older adult sharing of childhood photos of the senior participants, tracing of participants' hands for inclusion in Memory Book, conducting an intereview on "Positives of Aging," student reading to Grandbuddy, and a song/dance session.

Appropriate for Grade Level: K-3 (May be adapted for older students.)

 

MATERIALS:

Worksheets are presented in Adobe® .PDF format and require the user to have the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® Version 5 installed. Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Click on the icon below to obtain the free Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® if needed.

PRE-MEETING PREPARATION:

  1. Send notes to older adult participants reminding them that they will be bringing photos of themselves as children to the meeting.

  2. Prior to the arrival of the older adult partners, review the Checklist of Activities with students. Instruct students to make a check mark next to each item on the list when they have completed the task.

  3. Read the questions on the Interview Sheet out loud to the class and review the process for taking notes to record their partner's answers.

  4. Review the words and motions to the chosen song/dance activity with the class.

  5. Show students the handprint poems and give instructions on their completion with the Grandbuddies.

  6. Provide each student with a name-tag printed clearly with his/her name.

  7. Provide each student with a clipboard containing the Meeting 3 Checklist, "Positives of Aging" Interview Sheet, and Handprint Poems, along with a pencil for note-taking.

ACTIVITY 1 - Share Photos:

  • Allow time for the Grandbuddies to share their photographs and accompanying histories with their Little Buddies.

  • When the entire group has gathered the teacher will give a brief talk about the planned activities before suggesting that the partners begin touring the classroom and school.

ACTIVITY 2- Interview Grandbuddy:

  • Students and Grandbuddies return to the student's desk or table and complete the questions on the "Positives of Aging" Interview Sheet.

ACTIVITY 3 - Tracing Hands on Handprint Poem Pages:

  • Grandbuddy will trace student's hand on the "Little Buddy Handprint Poem."
  • Student will trace Grandbuddy's hand on the "My Grandbuddy's Handprint Poem."

    NOTE: THESE PAGES WILL BE COLLECTED FOR INCLUSION IN MEMORY BOOKS

ACTIVITY 4 - Little Buddies read to Grandbuddies

ACTIVITY 6- Song/Dance Activity

  • Teacher will play the music to the chosen song . Students will teach their Grandbuddies the words and motions to the song. Teacher will play the music again and ask the Grandbuddies to join in.

ACTIVITY 7- Thank You and Good-bye:

  • Refreshments are served.

  • Teachers will make any announcements to the group regarding future activities and take any questions participants may have before departing. Students thank their Grandbuddies for visiting.

Follow-Up:

  • Teacher will initiate whole group sharing of experiences with the Grandbuddies.

  • Student will begin work on the book about his/her Grandbuddy using the Story Starter: "Things my Grandbuddy enjoys.... " referring to the notes from the "Positives of Aging" Interview Sheet and illustrate the story.

  • Students color or decorate the tracing of their Grandbuddies hands for inclusion in the Memory Book.

  • Students complete the Story Starter: "Because of the Grandbuddy Project, I have learned that older people...." for inclusion in the Memory Book.
