Suggestions for Finding Project Participants

The first step in locating partners for your project should be researching your community to identify groups or individuals that may benefit from working with young people. Identify retirement communities, senior residences, and senior centers nearby, along with local agencies and organizations that work with older people.

When recruiting volunteers, it is recommended that you begin by attempting to locate groups (retirement communities, clubs, organizations, etc.) rather than seeking individual volunteers. There are many benefits in working with a established group. Transportation issues will be easier to manage. (Carpools, senior residence vans, etc. may be available to a group.) Senior volunteers will enjoy sharing and discussing the project with others they are in frequent contact with. An established group may have access to facilities that some of the meetings can be held in. (Retirement communities and/or senior residence facilities are particularly desirable as they provide opportunities for the participants to alternate visits between the school/classroom setting and the senior community/residence facilities.)

Some suggested potential connections follow:

  • Retirement communities
  • Senior centers
  • Nursing homes
  • Area senior social clubs
  • Community churches/synagogues
  • Civic clubs and lodges
  • Corporate retiree organizations
  • National Retired Teachers Association
  • American Association of Retired Persons
  • Area Agency on Aging
  • Relatives of school staff
