fact sheet: Soft Water

If water is soft, it means it contains very little calcium and magnesium compounds. If you have soft water you'll find that your soap will lather up (make bubbles) easily and you won't have any scale inside your kettle.

Which is best, hard or soft water?

Instead of calcium and magnesium ions, soft water contains more sodium ions than hard water. Sodium has been linked to heart disease.

Soft water dissolves metals such as cadmium and lead from metal pipes. Lead is poisonous and cadmium has been linked to hypertension.

Soft water doesn't sound very nice! But it does have its advantages. Soft water makes soap lather better, so gets clothes cleaner. If you've got soft water your washing machine will need less soap powder to do a good job. This is good for our environment. Soft water also doesn't form a horrible scum around your bath tub. So no more scrubbing your bath clean!! It also won't form any scale, or fur, inside your water pipes or kettle.
