fact sheet: Water Pollution

There are two main ways that water can become harmful through pollution.

1. The oxygen dissolved in water gets used up

This happens when algae and bacteria grow in the water so fast that they use up most of the oxygen. This is usually because the waer has become polluted with sewage or other substances, such as fertilisers from fields. This is called eutrophication.

2. Harmful substances get into the water

These may poison things which live in the water, or drink from it. These substance could come from industries, farms or homes. The most serious pollutants of rivers, lakes and oceans are:

sewage, fertilisers, pesticides, detergents, industrial waste, oil
