Changing Earth

Opened brand new in 2010, the Institute’s Changing Earth exhibit examines the powerful forces that shape our planet’s surface and transform its air, water and land. Cutting-edge interactive stations invite students to explore the types of changes taking place, discover options to slow climate change and learn innovative ways of dealing with deadly weather. Students can calculate their carbon footprint, make weather, find solutions to reduce carbon emissions, learn about earthquakes by measuring their own seismic activity and experiment with a giant stream table to observe the effects of changing water patterns, pressure and volume on the landscape.

Hands-on Earth Science Workshop

Guided by the Institute’s high-energy Educators, students will learn hands-on about the monumental forces of air and water and how these forces shape the land all around us.

Grades 3-5
The Earth is constantly changing – sometimes over thousands or millions of years, and other times in an instant! Students will shape their own landscapes in stream tables to explore the dynamic interactions between water and land. A strong focus is placed on the importance of observation in science.

Grades 6-8
Students will work with stream tables to explore how variability in water flow and forces of erosion can alter the land. While water creates change over time, people can change the water. How do rivers react to manmade efforts to control them, and how does this affect how people respond?
