Generations of visitors have traced the path of blood in the Institute’s two-story-tall Giant Heart, but the exhibit of the same name offers so much more. Students can see how much blood is in their bodies, hear blood flowing through arteries, use computer interactives to explore heart function and blood flow, learn about the vital importance of good nutrition, watch open-heart surgery and even compare the size and structure of different animal hearts.
Guided by the Institute’s team of dynamic Educators, students will gain exciting opportunities to further explore the function and anatomy of specific body parts by dissecting animal organs that are similar to our own.
Grades 6–8:
Eye Dissection Workshop
Working with a partner, middle-schoolers will dissect a cow’s eye to provide insight into the inner workings of a human eye.
Grades 9–12:
Heart Dissection Workshop
Working with a small group, high school students will dissect a sheep’s heart to explore the form and function of a mammalian heart.
Mummies:
Secrets of the Pharaohs 3D Film
Did you know that ancient Egyptians believed the heart – rather than the brain – was the source of human thought, wisdom and emotion? This 3D film follows scientists as they piece together the biological and archaeological evidence offered by Egyptian mummies. In addition to increasing our understanding of the culture, medicine and daily life of people who lived thousands of years ago, scientists today are reconstructing mummy DNA and deciphering ancient texts to gain insight and make advances in modern medicine.
