Investigating an Aerofoil Shape

Teachers' notes

Use a thin piece of card. Follow the pictures to make it into an aerofoil shape.

  • Blow hard on the front edge of the paper. Which way do you think it will move?
Thinking about Lift

When you blow on the front edge of the paper, the paper gets pushed up by the air underneath. The force of the air pushing the paper upwards is the force called LIFT.

Here's another way to think of it: When air is moving fast past the paper, it cannot push so hard on it. Its pressure is less. The air pressure under the wing is greater than the air pressure on top of the wing.
