[Reply from Allan Clarke of the Newfoundland Museum to J.
A. Bagley, dated 24 June 1988]
"Dear Mr. Bagley: Regarding your inquiries into Alcock and Brown's trans - Atlantic flight: Newfoundland was the first country in North America to adopt Daylight Saving Time, known locally as John Anderson's Time named after Sir John Anderson, a member of our Legislative Council, who introduced the Daylight Saving Act on June 17, 1917. From my research, it would seem that "Anderson's Time" was in effect for many years, and would certainly have been used on June 14-15, 1919. Obviously, when Brown refers to going to bed at 7 pm and arriving at the aerodrome at 3:30 am, he must have been using local time. If he was using G.M.T., they would have retired at 3.30 pm and gotten up at midnight, which would not appear to make sense. I have also enclosed maps showing Pleasantville, where the plane was put together, and Lester's Field from where they took off on their famous flight. [ . . . ] PS. Would you have any films pertaining to Alcock and Brown that we might be able to obtain copies of?" [etc] |
