Cosmic Lesson #1: Solar System Introduction

Our solar system consists of nine planets. They revolve around the closest star, the sun. Take a cyber-tour of the solar system at: http://www.seasky.org/sky3.html
The solar system also consists of stars, asteroids, comets and moons. Space and everything else in it is called the universe.
For details about the formation of the solar system and factual information, be sure to check: Our Solar System.

Asteroids are mountains of rock and metal that are found between Mars and Jupiter. Meteoroids are smaller pieces of rock and dust that fly around the solar system.
For more information, check: Views of the Solar System.

Comets are chunks of rock and ice that orbit the Sun in elliptical Paths. For more information about comets, visit: Comet Introduction

Student Activity:

  • Students illustrate the Solar System, labelling the sun and the nine planets, plus the asteroid belt. Print the diameter of each planet and the number of moons associated with each. Colour the planets with appropriate colours usually relating to that planet. (e.g. Mars=reddish-brown)
  • Solar System Song: The Family of the Sun
