Reading Standard: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.

Students will-

• Develop an interest in literature which includes multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects.
• Use a variety of reading strategies to enhance understanding, to relate ideas, to organize information, to make predictions, and to distinguish fact from fantasy during the reading process.
• Read independently for pleasure and information.
• Learn to locate and recognize sources of information including technological tools.

Writing Standard: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.

Students will-

• Write to acquire knowledge, promote lifelong communication, and gain confidence as a writer.
• Write frequently for a variety of purposes.
• Use elements of the writing process as appropriate.
• Practice a variety of prewriting activities to generate ideas.
• Begin to recognize and demonstrate knowledge of mechanics and standard spelling.
• Write to respond actively and imaginatively to literature.
• Begin to develop an understanding of and respect for multicultural and ethnic diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects.
  

Viewing and Representing Standard: The student will use, read, and view media/technology and analyze content and concepts accurately.

• Use technological equipment safely, carefully, and appropriately in order to complete tasks.
• Use media to view, to read, to write, and to create.
• Develop awareness of the importance of media in daily life.
• Use technological reference sources.

Science Standards:

Students should know-

• That Earth materials consist of solid rock, soils, liquid water and the gases of the atmosphere.
• The major differences between fresh and ocean waters.
• That plants and animals have external features that help them thrive in different environments.
• That plants and animals have life cycles which include birth, growth and development, reproduction and death: the details of this life cycle are different for different organisms.
• That each plant or animal has different structures which serve different functions in growth survival and reproduction
• That when an environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce and others die or move to new locations.
• That living things are found almost everywhere in the world; different types of plants and animals live in different places.
• That animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use plants or other animals for shelter and nesting.
• That all animals depend on plants; some animals eat plants for food while others eat animals that eat plants.
