Dear Representative _________

We, the undersigned students, teachers and friends of MOTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL request that you introduce a bill into the Florida House of Representatives proposing that the Florida Scrub Jay be declared the official state bird for the following reasons:

• The Florida Scrub Jay is the only bird species found nowhere else in the world but in Florida.
• Florida has no official state bird, and the unofficial state bird, the mockingbird, is the state bird for several other states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
• Organizations, including Indian River Audubon Society, Florida Audubon Society, Florida Ornithological Society, Sierra Club Florida Chapter, Sierra Club Turtle Coast Group and Friends of the Scrub join us in supporting the designation of the Florida Scrub Jay as the Florida state bird.
• The Florida Scrub Jay is beautiful and friendly to people but is currently considered endangered and in need of public awareness/support to help keep its habitat and population safe.

Petitions can be mailed to your district representative or to us at Moton and we will see that they are sent to the proper place.
